DEVIREDDY AP RESEARCH PROJECT
ANALYZING THE DEPICTION OF MIRANDA RIGHTS IN THE TV SHOW CRIMINAL MINDS
SHAILAJA DEVIREDDY

Project Overview
Many police procedural crime drama audiences base their knowledge on criminal procedure rights by watching TV- shows like Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI, etc. In my research, I want to focus on how one of those procedural rights is depicted in the TV show Criminal Minds. I'll be specifically looking at the Miranda rights which derived from the case Miranda v. Arizona in 1966. The rights are a necessary procedural step before being interrogated by police enforcement and must be read out to the individual in custody. The rights state that the individual in custody has the choice to remain silent and ask for an attorney to be present during questioning. Everything they say can be used at court as well.
Since TV- shows such as Criminal Mind are so popular, the wrong or lack of depiction of criminal procedural rights like Miranda Rights can potentially have an effect on people's knowledge about them. With my research, I want to explore more into the topic and conclude if Criminal Minds offers the right information and depiction of Miranda rights.
